Common reasons files stop opening
A file only needs a small damaged section in the wrong place, usually its header or index, for every program to refuse to open it.

What repair can and cannot do
File repair works by rebuilding the parts of a file that tell a program how to read it: the header, the index and the structure around the actual content. When the content itself is still there, repair usually brings the file back completely.
When part of the content has been overwritten, repair can still recover what remains. A video may play with a few seconds missing, or a photo may be complete except for a strip at the bottom. The preview shows you exactly what you will get before you save anything.
