Lock, hide or encrypt: which one you need
- Lock stops anyone opening, moving or deleting a folder on this PC without the password. It is quick and suits everyday privacy on a shared computer.
- Hide goes further: the folder disappears from view completely until it is unlocked.
- Encrypt scrambles the contents so they are unreadable without the password, even if someone removes the drive and connects it to another computer. Use a vault for anything that would do real harm in the wrong hands.
Keep your recovery key somewhere safe and separate from the PC. Encryption is only strong because there is no way around it, which means a lost password and a lost recovery key cannot be undone.
A note on shredding: on solid state drives, the drive itself decides where data is physically written, so overwriting is less certain than on a hard drive. For an SSD you are giving away, a full secure erase of the drive is the most thorough option.

Foxerly File Locker questions
What if I forget my password?
Use the recovery key you saved when you set up Foxerly File Locker. Without the password and the recovery key, encrypted vaults cannot be opened, by design.
Can other users on the PC open locked folders?
No. Locked and hidden folders need your password, whichever Windows account is used.
Is locking the same as encryption?
No. Locking and hiding control access on this PC. Encrypted vaults make the files unreadable even outside Windows. Use a vault for your most sensitive files.
Does the shredder work on SSDs?
It overwrites the file, but SSDs manage where data is physically stored, so it is less certain than on a hard drive. For an SSD you are giving away, erase the whole drive.
Can I protect a USB stick?
Yes. Premium creates portable lockers on USB drives that open on any Windows PC with your password.
Does it slow my PC down?
No. It only works when you lock, unlock or open protected files.
