Before you clone: a quick checklist
- Back up anything important first. Cloning is reliable, but a backup costs little and protects against a mistake in picking the target drive. Foxerly Backup & Restore can do it.
- Check the space. The new drive must be at least as large as the space you are actually using on the old one, not the old drive’s full size.
- Connect the new drive properly. Desktop PCs usually have a spare SATA or M.2 slot. For laptops with one slot, use a USB to SATA or USB to NVMe adapter.
- After swapping, check the boot order in your PC’s firmware settings if it does not start from the new drive straight away.
- Keep the old drive for a few days until you are sure everything works, then reuse it as a backup drive.

Will my PC start from the cloned SSD?
Yes. The clone includes the boot and recovery partitions Windows needs. If the PC still starts from the old drive, change the boot order in the firmware settings or remove the old drive.
Can I clone to a smaller SSD?
Yes, as long as the files you actually have fit on it. Foxerly Disk Clone resizes the partitions to fit.
Do I need to reinstall programs afterwards?
No. Programs, settings and files are copied as they are, so there is nothing to reinstall.
What is the difference between cloning and a backup image?
A clone is a ready-to-use copy on another drive. A backup image is a file you restore from later. Use a clone to switch drives, and a backup to protect your data over time.
My laptop has only one drive slot. Can I still clone?
Yes. Connect the new drive with a USB adapter or enclosure, clone, then swap it into the laptop.
What happens to my old drive?
Nothing changes on it. Once the new drive works, you can wipe it and use it as a backup or extra storage.
